Share your ideas for the CK On The Edge Arts Festival

There's a new arts festival planned for Downtown Chatham this summer. CK on the Edge will run for 11 days in July. At our Jan. meeting, the TK board agreed we'd be interested in being part of the event in some way, and now we're looking for your suggestions and ideas. We would be looking at performing on the mainstage, presumably for one night/day only. The festival is looking for a mix of contemporary and traditional art.
Also there are plenty of opportunities for individual artists, writers, filmmakers etc. to get involved as well. Here's the website: www.ckontheedge.com
So put on your thinking caps so we can further discuss our involvement at our Feb. board meeting!

Sign up for a Directing Workshop by Jane Carnwath, hosted by TK

Glenda Lansens has firmed up arrangements with Jane Carnwath to head up a director's workshop on April 10th and 11th, 2010.

It will be held in Studio One, and we will try to keep it down to 20 people in attendance.  The fee will be $50.00, including lunch, if you are registered before March 31, 2010.  After that date, the fee will be $60.00, including lunch.  In order to get the grant from WODL, we have to advertise it to other WODL community theatre groups, so to secure your place in the workshop, you need to book early.  We expect this will be well attended, as those who have watched Jane adjudicate at Festival know she is an excellent teacher, and this should be a very worthwhile workshop weekend.

Call Glenda at 352-1014 or email her at glansens@sympatico.ca to book your spot for the workshop.

Join the new CK Dramatists Society

The Chatham Cultural Centre, in conjunction with Theatre Kent, has announced the formation of The CK Dramatists Society (CKDS), a workshop group for writers in all dramatic genres. The group will meet on the second Wednesday of every month, beginning this Wednesday, Feb. 10 from 7-10pm.

The CKDS is a forum for dramatic writers to come together, share their work, and receive feedback from their peers. Anyone who writes plays, screenplays, television shows, or musicals is encouraged to participate. Two writers will sign up each week to share up to 20 minutes of writing. They can choose to have it read by their fellow writers, or if the work is further along they may ask for more experienced actors to come in to read the roles.  The CKDS will work with Theatre Kent to bring in actors as necessary.

This workshop environment provides an excellent opportunity to hear dialogue out loud, assess which moments in a piece are and are not working, and exchange ideas with fellow writers. There will be occasional featured discussions such as writing dialogue, building character, fighting writer’s block, and using proper script format.

Writers do not need to have prior writing experience to join the guild, but will be expected to have work to share within a few months of joining.

Anyone who wishes to join or would like more information should contact Mark Reinhart at 519-350-7477 or tredmark@hotmail.com.

Check out our new website

With many thanks to our honorary tech support Steve Pickard, we now have a new look and feel for our Theatre Kent website. Please check it out at www.theatrekent.org and let us know if you have any suggestions for things you'd like to see.

Submit your Theatre Kent suggestions

If you have any ideas for our next Theatre Kent get-together, or anything else Theatre Kent-related, please send them on over to Stacey Moninger at jandsmoninger@hotmail.com, or any other board member.

Choreographers needed for Dances in the Park

Following the success of last year’s premier event, CKdances will once again be presenting Dances in the Park in July 2010. This event is an outdoor dance festival held in Tecumseh Park featuring local choreographers and performers. Dances in the Park is the Chatham-Kent version of Dusk Dances, a hugely popular summer event that has brought contemporary and traditional dance to public parks across Canada since 1993.

Dances in the Park aims to continue to present original and unique contemporary dance pieces to the community through local choreographers and performers. This event will be held July 15-17, 2010 in Tecumseh Park, Chatham.

CHOREOGRAPHERS WANTED! Anyone interested in creating an original work for this festival is asked to submit a letter of interest and proposal containing the following:
· Choreographer’s Resume ·
· Description of the idea/theme/concept for the dance ·
· Estimated number of dancers to be involved and their ages ·
· If available, it would be beneficial to submit a dvd containing a sample of your work – something that would represent the type of dance you would create for this event.

Potential candidates should keep in mind that the focus of this event is contemporary and modern dance. Traditional/ethnic dance submissions are also welcome. We are looking for individuals who can create a unique piece that will excite, challenge, and entertain our audience.

Proposals are due by Friday, February 5th, 2010.For more information regarding Dances in the Park or for questions regarding your proposal, please contact Jamie either by phone or email (see below).

There are 5 choreographer positions available for the 2010 event. Choreographer positions are only open to current residents or natives of Chatham-Kent. Pending grant approvals, an honorarium will be given to choreographers. We welcome all submissions however only those selected for an interview will be contacted. We will also be compiling a list of interested dancers which will be given to the choreographers to assist them in casting their pieces. Interested dancers should submit their name, age, contact information and brief description of their dance background by February 5th, 2010.

CKdances is very excited about the development and understanding of this dance genre and looks forward to being able to continue to make dance accessible to all those in our community.

Proposals should be sent to: Dances in the Park c/o Kiwanis Theatre 75 William St N Chatham, Ontario N7M 4L4 Attention: Jamie Johnston Or emailed to: jazzhands@cogeco.ca
